Pegasus Mail for Windows (WinPMail) Updated 15 October 2000 > 1: What is the current version of Pegasus Mail for Windows and where > can I get it? The current version is v3.12c for 32-bit and 3.12b for 16-bit Windows. It is available from the following official distribution points: If using a Web browser, use these URLs: http://risc.ua.edu/pegasus/winpmail (for North American users) ftp://ftp.usm.maine.edu/pegasus/winpmail (for North American users) ftp://pegasus.topnz.ac.nz/pegasus/winpmail (for South Pacific users) Via FTP: risc.ua.edu, in /pegasus (for North American users) ftp.usm.maine.edu in /pegasus (for North American users) pegasus.topnz.ac.nz, in /pegasus (for South Pacific users) The file to download is w16-312b.exe (a 16-bit version for any version of Windows), or w32-312c.exe (a 32-bit version, only for use on Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0). > 2: Is the current version of Pegasus Mail "Year-2000-compliant"? Yes. For full information on this, including a detailed examination of the way Pegasus Mail uses and generates dates, send any message to the address faq-y2k@pmail.gen.nz > 3: When I send an Internet message, the status line incorrectly tells me > that there are two messages in the queue instead of one. Actually, WinPMail is being too correct here... When WinPMail processes the outgoing mail queue, there is always an extra message in the queue - the final form of the message currently being processed. WinPMail is probably not being helpful by reporting this extra message, but it's surprising how difficult it can be to make software LESS accurate. The condition is both normal and benign and can be safely ignored. > 4: Why can't I move from option to option in the Preferences dialog with > the key (16-bit version only)? This appears to be a limitation of the Windows dialog manager, which could not be worked around before the release of version 2.5x. This problem will be fixed in an upcoming release. > 5: I don't see the get/send mail options on my file menu, and I don't > see the three button-panel buttons for sending and retrieving mail. > 6: When I try to send mail to an Internet address, WinPMail tells me > that the address is ambiguous, and that I should use an IN: or MHS: > override. These problems indicate that your WINSOCK.DLL is not visible to WinPMail. WINSOCK.DLL is the system component that provides your Internet connectivity, and for WinPMail to be able to use it, it must be installed in one of the following places: * In a directory on the DOS PATH * In the \WINDOWS directory * In the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory * In the same directory as WINPMAIL.EXE To correct the problem, reinstall your WINSOCK.DLL so that it is properly located in one of these places, or add the directory where it is located to your DOS PATH. > 7: Why do all my folders and other mail files appear twice in WinPMail? If you can see two entries for each Distribution List, Folder, Addressbook or other WinPMail file when you try to select one, and one is in blue, then you have probably installed WINPMAIL.EXE in the same directory as your home mailbox (as opposed to using the recommended installation); this causes WinPMail to see every file as both personal and system-wide, and to list them twice. Solution: Move WINPMAIL.EXE (WINPM-32.EXE), WINPMAIL.DAT (WINPM-32.DAT), WPNNW3.DLL (if you are on a NetWare system) and WINPMAIL.HLP (WINM-32.HLP)into another directory. > 8: How do I install an upgrade from an older version of WinPMail to > the current version? There are two ways you can upgrade your installation: 1: Tell the Setup program to install the files in the directory where your existing copy of WinPMail is installed; no mail-related files will be lost when you do this, although if you have customised FFF files for any of the standard WinPMail extensions, you should save them and copy them back after the installation is complete. 2: Install the new version in its own directory then copy the file PMAIL.CFG from the old version's directory into the new version's directory. > 9: Is MAPI support planned for WinPMail? > 10: Is IMAP4 support planned for WinPMail Both are available in the current versions. > 11: WinPMail reports "Invalid password" when I connect to my POP3 > server, but I've double-checked and the password is right. The password may be right, but your username may not be (for security reasons, most POP3 servers will accept any username and fail the password automatically if the username is invalid). The most common cause of this is putting a full address in the "username" field of the Network Configuration dialog's POP3 section. If you can see an '@' symbol in this field, then it's wrong - WinPMail only wants your basic username, which is everything preceding the '@' in your address. If you are using WinPMail 1.22 or earlier, this error may in fact represent any of a number of completely unrelated problems - we recom- mend that you upgrade to any later version, where the error reporting is better and where a trace mode is available for troubleshooting. > 12: WinPMail tells me it can't find my home mailbox, but it's there! If you are running in standalone mode (not connected to a NetWare server), your standalone configuration might be incorrect - the most likely cause is an invalid path in either the home mailbox or new mailbox fields in PCONFIG. Try deleting the file PMAIL.CFG in the directory where WINPMAIL.EXE is located and re-entering the values the next time WinPMail starts up. > 13: WinPMail starts in standalone mode even though I'm connected to a > NetWare server on our LAN. > 14: Windows reports "Cannot find NETWARE.DLL" when starting WinPMail You probably have not installed NetWare support into your copy of Windows. Run the Windows setup program and see what Network it thinks you are using; if it says "None", choose "Novell NetWare" and insert the disks it asks for. You should also make sure you are using the most recent NetWare drivers from Novell - at the time of writing these are contained in the files vlmkt1.zip through vlmkt5.zip (you need all five), available from ftp://ftp.novell.com/pub/updates/nwos/dsclnt12/ or in the NOVUSER area on CompuServe. The "Cannot find NETWARE.DLL" message is an error in Windows - there is no "NETWARE.DLL" - it is looking for NETWARE.DRV. > 15: Problems with TCP/IP-based mail using WINSOCK. The quality of WINSOCK implementations currently available for Windows seems to be extremely variable, so if you have problems with WINSOCK- based mail in WinPMail, please check first that you have the current version of your WINSOCK.DLL and any support software, and that it's correctly configured. Next, if you are getting connection problems, try expressing the address of the host to which you want to connect using dotted IP notation instead of an address (or vice-versa). Many problems using WINSOCK across slow SLIP or PPP links arise from timeouts being set too short - set a much longer timeout value in your network configuration screen in these cases (I recommend up to 90 seconds). > 16: How can I stop WinPMail from running in "NetWare mode"? You can force WinPMail to run in standalone mode (ie, to ignore the connection to the NetWare server) by changing the command line you use to run the program to "WINPMAIL -A". This commandline switch also works for the DOS version of Pegasus Mail. > 17: When I send a message, Pegasus Mail inserts my address as > myname@pop.isp.com, but my address is myname@isp.com! Solution: Enter your E-mail address in the From: field entry of the Advanced Configuration Options section of Pegasus Mail's Network Configuration Dialog. Pegasus Mail will use this address to form the From: field in the message headers. > 18: How can I convert the mail and address books from my old mail program > to Pegasus Mail format? You can either go to http://www.interguru.com/mailconv.htm or get a copy of Mail System Converter which latest version is always available from http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~stephenk/pegasus.htm For Eudora mail boxes (and all other programs that use -Unix- MBX style mailboxes)you do not have to convert at all when you use the latest version of Pegasus Mail for Windows. Just go folders | add mailbox and enter the path to the directory where the Eudora *.mbx are situated and enter a name. The Eudora mailboxes are added in a new mailbox, with the chosen name. For converting to Exchange and Outlook, go to http://www.slipstick.com/exchange/e2mtips.htm For converting addressbooks there appears to be a program called "Dawn" that will do this too. Most major E-Mail programs, including Netscape, Outlook, Eudora, Pegasus Mail and more are now supported directly: http://www.freeyellow.com/members8/zakharin/Software/Dawn.html For even more information about converting, see: ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/ibmpc/dos/apps/pmail/pmail-addons.txt For compuserve users check out http://www.comaxis.com/csa.htm Note that Microsoft's mail systems mostly use undocumented proprietary formats, and that it may not be possible to convert these mail files. > 19: I encouter all kinds of problems after restoring mailbox files > from CD-ROM Q: I backed up my Pegasus Mail mailbox directory to CD-R (or CD-RW or DVD or whatever) and restored it after a hard drive replacement (or Windows OS reinstall). Now everything is behaving very strange. I cannot delete new mail messages and my mail folders say they are corrupted. Also, I can't make changes nor add addresses to any of my address books. Additionally, changes to my WinPMail configuration settings don't get saved anymore. What's going on? A: When you restore files from CD-ROM-based technology, the OS usually sets read-only flag on each of the files. Thus, WinPMail cannot make changes to the files anymore. To fix this, select all the files in your mailbox directory and press Alt-Enter (or right-click on the files and choose Properties from the popup context menu). Uncheck the Read-Only checkbox and click OK. > 20: I'd like to archive some of my mail folders and messages to a zip > drive or something. > 21: Is there a way of archiving some of the mail from my Pegasus Mail > mailbox and then restoring it at a later date? > 22: I'd like to be able to transfer some of my mail folders and messages > between my office and home computers. Can I do this with Pegasus Mail? You can do all this using the new Add Mailbox To List feature in v3.x of Pegasus Mail for Windows. Press Ctrl-L (or click on the Folder toolbar icon or use the File -> Mail Folders... menu option) to open the Folders window, then go to the Folders -> Add Mailbox To List menu option. From here you can specify a directory path to mount as a mailbox, including a ZIP drive, network directory path, or whatever. You should also give the mailbox a name that identifies this mounted mailbox (e.g. "Archive mailbox" or "Take Home"). Once the mailbox is showing in your Folders window, you can then create mail folders within that mounted mailbox and copy or move e-mail messages between folders in your main mailbox (i.e. My Mailbox) and this mounted mailbox. WARNING: In v3.12b and earlier, you cannot simply drag and drop mail folders between mailboxes--doing so will likely corrupt the folder hierarchy while not actually moving the folder files between the mailboxes. This limitation may be removed in a future release. If you want to restore the messages or mail folders to this machine or transfer them to another machine (such as at your home PC), simply mount the zip disk media mailbox again in the Folders window on the destination PC, create the required mail folders in the main mailbox (i.e. My Mailbox), and copy or move the messages between the folders in the mailboxes. > 22: Every time I close Pegasus Mail for Windows v3.x, the program causes a > GPF in WSOCK32.DLL. If you have installed a program called Popoff or Ads Off, try uninstalling them to fix the problem. > 23: I download the program but it is not on my disk? Some older virusscanner programs THINK that there is a virus in the exe file and silently delete it from your system. There is NO virus in the program. You either update to the latest version of you virusscanner (recomended) or switch of your virusscanner for this download. === Please mail any errors and ommisions in this faq to: tech-support@pmail.gen.nz ===
